Emergency food and diaper deliveries to families, and Birthday boxes for children.

Sisterwork is a bilingual family-centered education program that promotes economic mobility and educational access for mothers and young people in New Brunswick, NJ. Their workshops have covered financial literacy, wellness, and education in partnership with regional organizations including NBCC’s Windows of Understanding.

In response to COVID-19, Sisterwork has shifted all programming online and jumped in to aid with emergency food and diaper deliveries to families throughout New Brunswick. At the beginning, this looked like raising donations and accepting in-kind food donations from individuals, local organizations, and community members at large to contactlessly deliver emergency “food boxes” to six families with immunocompromised kids and limited resources. This initiative has grown to contactless delivery of food boxes to 25+ more families with emergency need and referrals to local organizations for ongoing support.

Sisterwork co-founder, Carolina Moratti, is a chef and leads this initiative on the day to day basis along with volunteer Claudia Benitez. A graduate of Elijah’s Promise Culinary School, Moratti has enrolled a team of bakers including Chef Garima Bansil and Chrissy Banks to bake birthday cakes for youngsters that are not able to have a party with friends and extended family during this time and delivered “birthday boxes.” And these benevolent bakers have chosen to donate the cakes!

In addition to birthday surprises, this initiative also sparked joy through contactless delivery of 30+ donated Easter baskets and holiday treats in early April thanks to partnership with Operation Uplift by Sharpened Mindz, Zakee Bowser Enrichment Foundation, New Brunswick NAACP, and Rutgers African-American Alumni Association among several other organizations.
