    We at the Edison Arts Society (EAS) are proud to salute new beginnings, continuing to usher in our Second Decade with all of our members, friends and supporters, and the new ones to come. You are all the contributors and heirs of what wonderful successes have been accomplished at EAS, as well as what wonders can be achieved in the years ahead. All of our citizens, whether young or old, benefit from the many programs the Edison Arts Society has to offer. It is a valuable asset not only to the local community but to the state.

    The mission of the Office of Arts & History is to improve the quality of life for all residents of Middlesex County by investing in arts and history. A wide variety of cultural programming is offered throughout the County, which promotes cultural values, goals and traditions of local communities, the state and the nation. The Division of Arts & History Programs Services is responsible for: Arts Programming – actively supports and promotes cultural programming within all art disciplines including Visual Arts, Theater, Music, Dance and public art History Programming – promotes the study of our historical heritage through educational programming, research, lectures, publications and special exhibits Folklife Programming – identifies, preserves and broadens the appreciation of folk arts and traditions expressed by community. It offers public events, interactive workshops, storytelling, exhibits, and residencies in the schools and can include crafts, music, dance, and even foodways! Makerspace Workshops – Makerspace programs are a part of the MiY Movement (Make It Yourself) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) workshops. Makerspace projects allow participants to create and innovate collaboratively. People of all ages and skill levels can enjoy our Makerspace programs relating to arts, crafts, science and technology Technical Assistance and Professional Development – Engage professional experts to present workshops in various areas of professional development, cultural management and building organizational capacity. I Like Me Program – teaches Cultural Diversity. Students from pre-school to grade 3 and special needs participants are introduced to arts, history and social traditions using multicultural artifacts such as hats, shoes and musical instruments. Native American Programs – document the rich heritage of Native Americans of the Lenape, who lived here in New Jersey and other native communities throughout the Americas. Programs include lectures, workshops, demonstrations, dance, music and storytelling. Arts and Wellness – Uses the power of creativity to promote wellness. Programs accommodate persons of all abilities and include hands-on workshops and performances at hospitals, senior centers, Veteran’s homes and more

    The Folklife Program for New Jersey, a project of the Division of Arts & History, identifies, preserves and broadens the appreciation of folk arts and traditions and offers performances, workshops, storytelling, exhibits and more: Middlesex County’s Folklife Program for New Jersey  is one of five Folklife Centers in the State and the only one in New Jersey to be designated as a Local Legacy by the United States Congress. The Folklife Program of New Jersey identifies, preserves and broadens the appreciation of folk arts and traditions expressed by community, and encourages public involvement through cross-cultural exchange, interactive participation and development of educational materials. Folk arts are shared expressions and ceremonies that form culturally specific traditions and can include crafts, music, dance, and even foodways! They can be defined by occupation, geographic region, language or religious practices and are passed down from generation to generation or through a specific community. The Folklife Program offers public events, interactive workshops, storytelling, exhibits, and residencies in the schools. It uniquely addresses and serves populations and artists from the ever-changing demographics of our region.

    The East Brunswick Campus of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School district houses over 440 students in 14 career majors.  The School of the Arts career majors include Theatre Arts, Dance, Digital Film, Graphic Design, Arts Technology, Multimedia, Art & Design, and soon Music Technology.  Prospective students for the School of the Arts have to apply, audition, or submit portfolios as part of the admissions process.  Students interested in the other various career majors will cycle through five career majors as a freshmen after going through the application and admissions process.  The East Brunswick Campus has received Bronze Level Certification as a Future Ready School as well as been designated a Green Ribbon School.  The campus is also anticipating Bronze Level Certification according to Sustainable Schools for New Jersey framework.  East Brunswick Tech has also just opened a brand new MakerSpace in place of an outdated library where students can take part in project-based learning in a hands-on flexible learning environment.

    Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts was established by the City of Perth Amboy. The gallery hosts art shows, events and classes. They also operate an excellent summer youth art camp and a mural punks program. Their annual show for Valentine’s Day called Red has been very popular for years. They host the annual Waterfront Arts Festival.

    Since its founding in 1929, the Raritan Photographic Society has been serving the photographic interests of the community. The camera club is conducting an outstanding program of lectures, competitions, and special events. From September to May the club meets twice a month on Thursday evenings at locations in Milltown, NJ. At one meeting we feature member competitions in black-and-white prints, color prints and digital images, at the beginner, advanced and salon levels. Our second monthly meeting consists of lectures, demonstrations, discussions, or activities, such as a studio night. These programs are designed to help the members learn the basics of photography, new techniques for taking pictures, or applications of photography. We also organize field trips to photogenic sites, and a year-end banquet and competition.

Their performances are jam-packed with rhythms that reflect the Boleros, Rumbas, Guarachas and Cuban music from the 1940s. The Feeling Messengers is noted throughout New York City and New Jersey for combining contemporary traditional jazz and bossanova with the traditional Cuban Son that takes the audience into a feeling of nostalgia, love, longing and happiness all through their music. The Feeling Messengers bridges generations and understanding of the important history music has played in breaking down barriers of misunderstanding. Through music we can touch the hearts, minds, bodies and soul through the heartbeat of good Cuban music. Previously our name was The Feeling Collective Band but know we changed it to The Feeling Messengers because that’s what we are: Messengers of Feeling. Goals Recording a CDs.     The Barron Arts Center has been housed in the former Barron Library since 1977, when the library operation moved to a new building. The handsome brownstone was constructed in 1877 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and its construction was funded by a bequest from township native Thomas Barron. In addition to its decorative exterior, the interior exhibits decorative tiles, and exposed vaulted ceilings and ornamental stained glass windows. The center hosts exhibits, concerts, and classes for 3,000 participants annually.

    The Zimmerli Art Museum is one of the largest and most distinguished university-based museums in the country. It collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits world-class works of art to provide the university community and diverse regional, national, international audiences with direct experience of the visual arts. Scholarly activities make art accessible through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs. Founded in 1966 as the Rutgers University Art Gallery, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum was established in 1983 in response to the growth of the permanent collection. The major benefactors for the construction of the museum were Ralph and Alan Voorhees, and the Zimmerli was named for their mother. The museum is headquartered in a 70,000-square-foot facility and has a collection of 60,000 objects ranging from ancient to contemporary art and featuring particularly rich holdings in the areas of French art of the nineteenth century, Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art, and American and European works on paper, including prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. The Zimmerli is located at 71 Hamilton Street (at George Street) on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The Zimmerli is a short walk from the NJ Transit train station in New Brunswick, midway between New York City and Philadelphia. Admission is free to all visitors.
