Initially constructed as a simple, single-room, one-and-one-half story home in 1728 by Peter Bodine, a merchant in the thriving port community of Raritan Landing. The Metlar-Bodine House was enlarged with Greek Revival additions made in the 1850s by then-owner George Knapp. About two decades later, the home was remodeled again during the Victorian period under the ownership of George W. Metlar. Today, the Metlar-Bodine House is one of only two buildings left in what was once the heart of Raritan Landing (the other is the Cornelius Low House). Today the historic buildings serve as local history museums.
